CAD Data Translation Solutions

3DTransVidia has been developed to translate and repair existing CAD models created in different CAD systems. For data migration or working with existing CAD models, 3D TransVidia offers the most suitable solutions to convert 3D CAD models from one format into another or repair existing CAD models to form valid B-Reps at a controlled tolerance. This process can run fully automated using a batch mode option to translate large data sets when CAD system platforms change and legacy data needs to be migrated. A full choice of data formats is supported by 3DTransVidia, providing flexibility and automation.

CAD Data Repair and Healing (existing CAD models)

When a CAD model is translated into an environment that is different from the CAD system that created it, you may be faced with problems: missing surfaces, deformed surfaces, untrimmed surfaces, split surfaces, or the model does not form a solid. These problems are easily resolved with 3DTransVidia's repair and healing technology. The repair process is done in two phases: automatic and manual. Automatic repair resolves the most typical CAD incompatibility issues (over 70 errors) fully automatically. No changes to the model are introduced in this phase as 3DTransVidia strictly maintains the original model tolerance and does not allow changes that exceed this tolerance.

If repairs cannot be automatically made to satisfy the original model tolerance, the repair is not performed and it is left to the user to manually repair. Specialized tools are provided to make the manual corrections. This process is supported by error identification and classification function, which further simplifies the process.

3DTransVidia can also be used to repair existing models to improve the model quality required by the destination system or downstream processes the model is going to be submitted to.

Changing/Improving Original Model Definition

Specific applications may require the 3D model not only in a given data format, but also in a specific mathematical definition. Some applications require that the model entities be in an analytic form such as: cylinders, planes, cones, sphere, but model representation is NURBS surfaces. 3D TransVidia can automatically convert these NURBS surfaces into an analytical representation. This conversion increases the model quality and ensures better interoperability.

Some applications as CAM may require a high accuracy triangulation. The parametric (NURBS) representation has to be converted into triangulation with a given accuracy. It is important to start from a correct parametric definition (valid B-Rep), which can easily be converted into a "consistently triangulated" representation. Consistent triangulation cannot include any ambiguous definition, such as gaps, overlaps, ledges, open contours. 3DTransVidia is able to provide a valid B-Rep in order to create a clean and consistent triangulation at desired accuracy.

Translation to SolidWorks with Features

3DTransVidia can also be used for feature based translation of CAD models into SolidWorks. The process is semi-automatic by transferring complete design elements that manually extracted from the original CAD model. SolidWorks is them able to use them to create features such as holes, cuts, chamfers, fillets, extrusions, and ribs. This is a quick and reliable way to re-create a model in SolidWorks and get fully editable/feature based representation.

It is highly recommended that the model be repaired with FormatWorks or 3DTransVidia to improve the model before using the feature extraction capability. This enables the SolidWorks feature recognition to get an optimal result versus directly importing the model using the SolidWorks translation functionality.

Hybrid Model Representation

STEP models can include 3D CAD data description in a hybrid representation. A CAD model or CAD assembly can include both parametric (NURBS) and triangulated representation. In general this kind of data is not supported in most CAD systems. 3DTransVidia can read such files and easily separate them into different folders to create separate models. This is a unique and ultimate solution to this problem.

CAD Data Quality

Various quality standards are available in 3DTransVidia to make sure that the quality of the 3D model meets desired standards 3DTransVidia supports industry standards such as SASIG, VDA, JAMA, and allows companies to define their own quality standard.

PMI, GD&T, Annotation

Extracting additional information from native CAD data complying with Model Based Definition (3D CAD model + related description) is simple and supported for main CAD systems such as CATIA V5, Siemens NX, Inventor, Creo/Pro-E. The PMI, GD&T and Annotation are extracted together with the 3D model for visualization in a graphical window. This information can be viewed on the screen or be used produce printouts for further communication within an organization. The PMI, GD&T and Annotation are also available for other applications through the Capvidia OpenXML file structure.

Capvidia's ViewVidia product is the simplest way to view the 3D data and related 3D annotations. This product can read all major CAD formats to view parts and assemblies in native and neutral CAD formats.

Reverse Engineering

3DTransVidia also provides all the necessary functions for automatic reverse engineering of 3D CAD in triangulated representation into a parametric (NURBS) representation. The input model is analyzed and split automatically into patches, which are then reversed into a NURBS or analytical representation (plane, sphere, cylinder, SOR, cone, etc.). This technology is available as library can be easily integrated into other applications. It is currently used by Materialize in their 3Matic software.
